{Review} The Fry, Korean fried chicken restaurant in North York

Website: n/a, Zomato link
Address: 6012 Yonge St., Toronto, ON
When I visited:
May 2015, dinner, 7 people
Highchairs: No
Rating: $$, 3.5

I wanted to give this place a 4 rating for the food, but the dingy atmosphere with dark lighting and slow service needs improvement. We went to the original location on Yonge St., south of Steeles Ave, as I heard it was bigger than the second location at Yonge St. and Sheppard Ave.

Note that there are no high chairs and also steep stairs to the washrooms, so it is not the most kid friendly restaurant.

We had a large group with 3 kids, so we made reservations in advance. The lady on the phone did not speak English very well, so it was tough for me to know if the reservations were made. When we arrived, I was not surprised that the table was not set out for us. With only one waitress around and full tables, it was clear that they were understaffed and service would suffer.

Good thing I was in a patient mood and was willing to deal with the short staff. To make up for it, the restaurant did a fantastic job at making tasty Korean fried chicken.

I normally head to the Galleria at Don Mills to order really good Korean fried chicken with the special sauce and happy I have found another spot.

To start, the restaurant gave us a sharing plate of pickled radish, coleslaw and house-salad with unlimited refills.

We ordered the “half-and-half chicken” that allows you to choose to flavours. We chose the ‘original fried chicken’ and ‘fried chicken in sauce’. We also ordered ‘The Fry wings in spicy sauce’ that came with fries, as well as the seafood rice cake in a cream sauce and sweet potato fries.

The original fried chicken was crispy, well seasoned with tender meat, so this was my favourite, followed the wings in the spicy sauce. I am not sure if the restaurant makes their sauce in-house as it tastes store bought but it was delicious.

I really enjoyed the rice cake dish, which was a new addition to their menu. The price is on the high-end as the ‘half-and-half chicken’ dish was about $26.99 but the portions were big.

Overall:

Great Korean fried chicken restaurant but slow service. Maybe next time I will order take-out instead. If you have a toddler, remember to bring your own booster seat.
