Address: 324 Hwy 7 East, Unit 7, Richmond Hill
When I visited: January 2015, dinner, 7 people
Rating: 3.5, $$
- In January 2017, the restaurant was reported closed.
I have only ordered take out from Pa Pa Changs and food courts for Taiwanese food but haven’t been to a sit-down Taiwanese restaurant, so I was excited for the visit. Mama Bear had opened late 2014 and it was voted as the “Favourite New Business in 2014” by Yelpers. The restaurant sits around 15 tables and is often packed, so I suggest making reservations a day in advanced.
When I stepped in, the restaurant had a faint smell of the stinky tofu which may be offsetting to customers who are not used to it.
My friends and I shared a countless number of dishes and found the dishes to be a hit and miss depending on what we ordered. The salt and pepper fish cakes was definitely a miss, as the fish cakes were dry. The pork blood rice cake had a spongy texture that I did not love.
However, I absolutely loved the beef tendon and beef noodles soup with thin noodles. The soup was flavourful and the noodles had a nice bounce to it. Other Taiwanese specialities were spot on and are highly recommended including the popcorn chicken, house-made pan fried dumplings, Taiwanese sausages, minced pork rice and the stinky tofu with pickled cabbage. We had more dishes, but these were the highlights.
You will come out of the restaurant smelling like stinky tofu but the variety of snack foods, noodles and rice dishes will satisfy various taste buds and make it worth the visit. I wish they had bubble tea as well but there are plenty of bubble tea options close to the restaurant.
